In Advanced Dentistry Clinic Asensio we wanted to dedicate a few words to those myths and rumours that had always been circulating about dental health. The majority of myths are based on logical assumptions, however, in order to be able to use the most convenient hygiene methods it is necessary to understand the real facts about oral hygiene.

Although the particles of food remaining between the teeth may disturb, we recommend using a natural dental floss, made from silk than a toothpick which if not specifically designed for this function, might hurt the area between the teeth. Using a silk dental floss or an interdental toothbrush is the best solution to replace a toothpick.

Hard toothbrush cleans better

You have certain logic to think that toothbrushes with firmer bristles are more effective for removing plaque and stains from the teeth. However, this type of toothbrushes is more likely to wear out the enamel of teeth and cause gum resession, exposing more of the tooth, or the tooth’s root. In Advanced Dentistry Clinic Asensio we recommend using medium or soft toothbrushes, or in the latter case, carefully using a hard-bristled toothbrush.

One pregnancy, one tooth

The tooth loss that had been related to the pregnancy for a long time, is actually related to the presence of cavity which, obviously, has “lived” in the mouth before becoming pregnant. What pregnancy really causes is gum inflammation, thus, if we take simple preventive measures, we should not lose a single tooth.

It is normal to lose teeth with age

Teeth have some natural characteristics that make them very strong and resistant. Therefore, tooth loss is not associated with the age. If proper hygiene is performed and visits to see a dentist are regular, we can live a lifetime with the same teeth.

I do not perform dental cleaning because I do not want to damage the enamel

A professional dental cleaning does not damage enamel, but instead removes the plaque and tartar from the surface of the teeth. Overall, a good dental cleaning helps to maintain our teeth healthy and prolongs their life. Besides, in nowadays medicine there is modern technique used, for exampe new ultrasonic equipment that reduces the possible risks even more.

We hope that these advices will help you to change your dental habits and improve your dental hygiene. If you think that apart from taking these actions you need a professional revision, remember that the first consultation in our dentistry is completely free.
